Say yes/say no Madonna Enthroned

‘Say yes/say no’ Madonna Enthroned is part of the Mythos/Dogma series, of which an underlying theme is the restitution of agency to the female figures of Greek mythology and the Catholic canon. This particular portrait of a personal friend began as a drawing in appreciation of her majestic fashion sense, but as I began to model her as a Madonna figure I wanted to give this Madonna the jurisdiction to choose her own fate, a free will so lacking in most Annunciation scenes. The symbols of her consent are displayed by the animals on either side of the central figure; a rabbit for fecundity, but also liberty and a unicorn for chastity, but perhaps also dogmatic devotion. Both animals are ‘yes’ and ‘no’ symbols simultaneously.
