Jupiter and Io After Correggio

Jupiter and Io After Correggio (Today’s Forecast: Cloudy with Chance of Showers) is part of the Mythos/Dogma series, of which an underlying theme is the restitution of agency to the female figures of Greek mythology and the Catholic canon. In a way, it’s a retelling of a story so long dominated by male perspective, ambition and dominance. This particular illustration is modeled after the painting, Jupiter and Io, by the Italian late Renaissance artist Antonio Allegri da Correggio. In mythology, Jupiter is well known for appearing to his various paramours in strange disguises: one time taking the form of a swan, another time of a bull, and in his affair with Io, he became something even more odd, and immaterial, a dark cloud. A rather large dark cloud that enveloped the earth to hide his affair from his wife (which in broad daylight isn’t suspicious at all ). Here, Io is re-imagined as a weather forecaster, dressed in the ubiquitous weather person dress (as made famous) and indulging in in office romance. The inscription reads:

Today’s Forecast: Cloudy with Chance of Showers.
